Ever spent some time in another country and tried to learn their language? How about getting to know locals?
English conversation classes at East came out of an identified need of newly arrived migrants asking East people to help them practice their English skills. Often migrants/travellers are spending large periods of time working and studying and can become quite isolated. Each Sunday afternoon a couple of “Easties” spend an hour or two having a relaxed chat with new friends/acquaintances on… well, just about anything!!
It could be explaining a saying overheard that week, practicing new word pronunciation and meanings for an upcoming test, social etiquettes for parties or meeting new people, sports trivia, or discussing world events (even ‘mango farming’ one week when a Korean traveler returned to Melbourne from a stint working in SA/NT. Us Aussies learnt a lot from that one!). We hope to expand this opportunity in the near future to include some more regular social gatherings to create even more of a sense of belonging and friendship between all involved.
It’s always an interesting afternoon and new migrants and volunteers are always welcome. It’s also FREE of charge! Volunteers are rostered on once every 2 months. Feel free to come and check it out one week if you want to experience it before deciding on more.
